This program prefers that one adoptive parent be
of
Japanese heritage. However, families not meeting this criteria may be
considered for children of mixed Japanese heritage. The
majority
of children offered are infants and are voluntarily
surrendered.
In most cases,
children remain in a small hospital-like setting, receiving
individualized care until the process of relinquishment is
completed. At the present time, referral time can
be
expected to be up to two years. Once a child is assigned,
processing time is approximately four months. Children placed
through this program must be legally adopted in their adoptive parents’
country of legal citizenship.
It is important that any family that
wishes to
consider this program first apply to VIDA and be assured of their
acceptance before selecting an agency in your home state to cooperate
with VIDA for the home study, follow up and finalization services. If
you live in New York or New Jersey, VIDA will be providing all services
as a full service agency including the home study and follow up. Japan
is not a Hague country and therefore you will be submitting first an
I600A to immigration. If VIDA is not providing the home study VIDA must
approve the agency you select for this service and have an agreement
with that agency.
